County Mental Health Services

Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS)

TBS is available for eligible* children/youth whose mental health symptoms and behaviors have led to, or put them at risk of, hospitalization and/or residential treatment. TBS Specialists work directly with the child and the child’s support network—including caregivers, other mental health professionals, and school personnel—on a plan that focuses on skill-building, emotion-regulation, safety, and consistency across all of the child’s environments.

*To receive TBS, a child must have full-scope Medi-Cal and currently receive speciality mental health services through Contra Costa Behavioral Health.

Intensive

TBS is the most intensive service EMBRACE offers. Services can be provided for several hours a day, multiple days a week, if warranted to keep the client safe and prevent hospitalization and/or loss of current placement. TBS Specialists can meet with a client in all settings where unsafe behaviors and emotional dysregulation occur.

Individualized

One of the first steps in TBS is conducting a functional assessment of the client’s behaviors, meaning that the TBS Specialist assesses what function the target high-risk behaviors serve for a client. Based on this assessment, the TBS specialist works with the client and care team to develop positive replacement behaviors that serve the same or a similar function, while being safe and non-disruptive.

Goal-Driven

Each month, TBS Specialists measure the current presence and impact of high-risk behaviors through direct observation and reports from caregivers, other treatment team members, and the client. The goal is to determine what is working well and what may need to be adjusted over the next month to achieve the treatment goals. When barriers to progress are identified, the TBS Specialist collaborates with the care team to make adjustments to the treatment plan and increase support as needed.
